The National Capital Authority will welcome Canada’s Dominion Carillonneur, Dr Andrea McCrady, to Canberra on Monday 17 February, for a lecture at the National Capital Exhibition and concert at the National Carillon.
Following 18 years as the carillonneur at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Spokane, Canada, Dr Andrea McCrady was appointed to the position of Dominion Carillonneur in Ottawa in 2008.
She has been an active member of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America since 1976, achieving professional Carillonneur status in 1979.
She holds a B. A. (History) from Trinity College, Hartford, where she first encountered the carillon; a medical doctorate from McGill University in Montreal, and a B. Mus. (Carillon) from the University of Denver.
She serves as an Adjunct Professor in carillon studies at Carleton University in Ottawa and is also responsible for the maintenance of the Dominion Carillon Library Archives.
Join us for a free presentation at the National Capital Exhibition Theatre where Dr McCrady will share her experience as the Dominion Carillonneur of Ottawa, highlighting important events at the Dominion Carillon over the years.
A special carillon concert will be presented by Dr Andrea McCrady at 6:00 pm.
Dr Andrea McCrady will present a program of music titled Northern Winter = Southern Summer with a mix of compositions and arrangements of music from Canada and beyond.
Featured pieces include Winter Wonderland, Summertime, and the Australian and Canadian National Anthems. The full program will be available on the day.
Pack snacks, a picnic blanket or chairs and enjoy the music from the Queen Elizabeth II Island or its surrounds. The best place to listen is on the island, but on a day with good weather, the bells can even be heard over at the sculpture garden at the National Portrait Gallery.
Following the concert from 7:00 – 7:15 pm, there will be a meet and greet opportunity with Andrea at the base of the carillon.
