In 2022, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II celebrates 70 years as The Queen of Australia. To honour this milestone, the National Capital Authority (NCA) is mounting a people’s exhibition labelled “The Queen and Me” where we turn our attention to telling the stories of the people in the crowds and the faces lining the streets during one of Her Majesty’s visits.
The Exhibition will celebrate the experiences of Australians who witnessed firsthand any of the Queen’s official trips to the National Capital.
This is a call for memories. What was your experience of the day? What interesting anecdotes can you share? Did you have any close interactions with Queen Elizabeth II? Will you share recollections of what those visits meant to you and why?
The Queen and Me will be a FREE exhibition to be presented at the National Capital Exhibition (NCE) from June 2022.
A day off from school? Waving a flag that came free with the newspaper? Were you in an honour guard? Perhaps you presented the Queen with a posy of flowers or held open the door of her car at Parliament House?
And if you did any of these things – do you still have the scout/guide/military uniform that you wore? Did your proud family take photos? Maybe you attended an official dinner or opening and souvenired a programme.
The NCA is calling on the public to share personal photographs, items of commemoration and memorabilia, videos and stories captured in audio or written form. From the traditional to the unconventional, the best of these items will be showcased in the people’s exhibition.
Submissions are now open and can be made here or by contacting NCA’s Attractions Manager on exhibitions@nca.gov.au. The deadline for submission is 30 April 2022.
