Draft Heritage Management Plan - Changi Chapel and General Bridges Grave
Located within RMC Duntroon, the grave of Brigadier-General Bridges was designed by architect Walter Burley Griffin in 1916 and completed in 1920. The grave is important as a memorial to Bridges as the first Commandant of Australia's first Military College, which was established in October 1910 at Duntroon. General Bridges Grave is significant for its symbolic, cultural and social associations as part of the landscape setting of Duntroon and the history of Australia's defence forces; and for its aesthetic characteristics which reflect the prevailing ideas for war memorials of the period. The place was included on the Commonwealth Heritage List in 2004.
Reconstructed at RMC Duntroon in 1987, Changi Chapel is significant for its special association with the former prisoners of Changi Camp, a World War II Prisoner of War camp in Singapore. The Catholic Chapel was originally built in 1944 by prisoners held by the Japanese military forces. It reflects the enduring faith of prisoners subject to adversity. The Chapel serves as the National Memorial to Prisoners of War and holds symbolic value for all Australian former Prisoners of War, particularly those from World War II. This place was included on the Commonwealth Heritage List in 2004.
