MEDIA RELEASE

Paddle boats will return to Lake Burley Griffin this weekend, after the National Capital Authority signed an agreement with Love Boats Canberra to restore and operate the iconic vessels.

Under the agreement, six historic vessels, much-loved by Canberrans and visitors alike, will be lovingly restored and resume operations from Regatta Point Jetty.

The fleet will also be expanded through the addition of nine new paddle boats, which will operate from Commonwealth Place.

The new paddle boats will accommodate up to four adults and offer sun protection, ensuring comfort during those warm summer days on the Lake – with the historic vessels accommodating two people.

The paddle boats will be available for hire on weekends throughout the year and on weekdays during school holidays – costing $30 for half an hour, and $40 for an hour.

Quotes attributable to Federal Minister for Territories, Kristy McBain MP:

“Paddle boats have been an iconic part of Lake Burley Griffin for almost 50 years, creating treasured memories for people growing up in the region, and for the thousands that flock to the National Capital every year.

“The restoration of historic paddle boats and the addition of new vessels to operate from Commonwealth Place will open up this wonderful Canberra experience to a new generation of locals and visitors.”

Quote attributable to Federal Member for Canberra, Alicia Payne MP:

“I’m delighted that paddle boats will return to Lake Burley Griffin in time for spring and will continue to be part of the experience of living in and visiting Canberra.

“Lake Burley Griffin will celebrate its 60th anniversary in October, and it is wonderful that paddle boats will be able to take their rightful place at the heart of these celebrations.”
