The National Capital Authority is carrying out remediation to one of the 5 flood gates which operate within Scrivener Dam. The flood gates are one of the dam’s most important operational features, playing a key role in Canberra’s flood management system. They assist in controlling the level of Lake Burley Griffin and releasing water into the Molonglo River as needed.
How are they different from sluice gates? Whilst sluice gates are designed for controlled, routine water regulation consisting of smaller and more precise flows, flood gates are designed primarily for large, rapid water releases commonly associated with floods.
These works will increase the longevity of the gates, remove lead paint risk and protect against corrosion. The remediation works include removal of the existing degraded coating material, repair of corrosion and recoating.
