This grassed area close by Lake Burley Griffin is named after one of Australia’s most renowned writers.
The venue, with views of the parks, trees and national buildings on the lake, and the Captain Cook Memorial Jet, is available for both public and private events. There is parking available nearby and regular bus services along King Edward Terrace.
Patrick White (1912 – 1990) is currently the only Australian to have been awarded a Nobel Prize for Literature (1973). He was the first winner of the Miles Franklin award for literature and was offered several other awards, which he refused. When named as Australian of the Year for 1974, he used his speech to ask all Australians to reflect on the state of the country.
During his lifetime 12 novels, three short-story collections, and eight plays were published, often acclaimed overseas but receiving mixed reviews in Australia due to his portrayal of the Australian way of life.
