Along with Commonwealth Park and Rond Terrace, this forms the central parklands noted on the original Griffin design for the central basin of Lake Burley Griffin. It has been planted with Australian and introduced species as open parkland in counterpoint to the plantings of Commonwealth Park.
Kings Park is the site of several national, civilian memorials:
Memorials to the Australian Merchant Navy Memorial and the HMAS Canberra Memorial are located close by the lake, within this park.
It is also the location of Boundless Playground, an all abilities children’s playground, Blundells Cottage and is the gateway to Queen Elizabeth II Island, the site of the National Carillon.
