The following formal submission have been made public
Submitter: Maureen KingshottNew Southern Entrance
I object to the NCA's 'consultation' process as much as to the proposed plan to expand the existing War Memorial.
I understand that work to implement the plan has already begun, and if so, it is clear that you are not interested in genuine consultation, that the plan is a fait accompli and that ordinary citizens like me are wasting our time providing our comments. But I will comment anyway to let you know that I object to the planned extension and do not want $500 million of taxes paid by me and many others to be spent on it.
I agree with many of the submissions to date, that the planned extension is anathema to the idea of a memorial, a place of quiet reflection on the waste and sacrifice of war. Instead the plan seeks to create a US style Disneyland, a gee wow experience for visitors, stocked with military hardware from arms manufacturers/donors the world can well do without.
The current War Memorial is a dignified space where people can honour the sacrifice of men and women who were killed, wounded or traumatised serving their country. It should remain a sober, sombre place, not a a showcase for arms manufacturers. We are not yet the 51st state of the USA and our cultures are significantly different.
In the middle of a pandemic where the government is spending billions, and wasting millions on greedy corporate squillionaires, the $500 million allocated for the planned extension would be much better spent on proper quarantine facilities, mental health services for veterans, upgrading rural hospitals, supporting the refugees from our latest military debacle in Afghanistan and other socially useful services and facilities.
Please do not proceed with this total waste of public money. And in future consultations please take the views of ordinary citizens into account before you finalise any plans.
