Given the outcome of the last consultation process in which the NCA received an overwhelming vote of opposition to the redevelopment of the Australian War Memorial I am no doubt wasting my time in responding to this next "consultation" process - especially having witnessed first hand the destruction of trees which were over 70 years of age and the architectural vandalism in demolishing Anzac Hall following soon afterwards.
My grandfather died at Gallipoli and his son, my late father, fought in the Second World War as a bomber pilot so I have nothing but the greatest respect for those who have fought for this country. The War Memorial has always been a special place in which to reflect upon the sacrifices made by those who died or were wounded in war. Its quaint architecture and modest scale has so beautifully supported the notion of it being both a memorial as well as in keeping with the original scale of the Burley Griffin plan.
What we see now proposed will greatly damage the heritage and culture of our nation's capital. I feel that this sacred memorial is being tranformed into a showcase for the machinery and weapons of war over and above honouring the sacrifices and absolute horrors endured by both armed forces and civilians -ironically as a result of such armaments. Let us not celebrate the Masters of War at the cost of losing a cultural and spiritual icon. Lest we forget!
