Federation Mall is the grassed area on the central Land Axis of the Griffin design, between Parliament House and Old Parliament House. Site of protest rallies, social gatherings and events it is the ceremonial and symbolic link between the old and new houses of parliament.
Lined with mature Eucalypts and ceremonial flag poles this area also includes the base of the Commencement Column Foundation Stone and is intersected by the cutting for State Circle. It has been the site of countless protests and vigils since 1988, when Parliament House opened. These have included protests against wars in the Middle East, Afghanistan Ukraine and Israel. First Australians and supporters gathered here to hear the Apology to Australia’s Indigenous Peoples. The Australian democratic system includes a citizen’s right to protest peacefully.
Federation Mall is a venue for hire but is protected as part of the Parliament House Vista.
