Night markets, food and drink, and a massive light show are coming to Lake Burley Griffins nightly from 25 – 28 January

For the first time, Lights on the Lake will transform Lake Burley Griffin into a vibrant canvas. Witness a stunning display of light and colour projected onto two enormous water screens, accompanied by a visual feast of lasers lights and a stirring soundtrack. This 12-minute show will occur nightly from 25 – 28 January at regular intervals so that everyone has the chance to see it. 

Lights on the Lake will be accompanied by night markets featuring the best food, drinks and crafts Canberra has to offer. 

This free community event is great for families and friends, so gather your favourite people, pack your picnic blanket and head down to Commonwealth Place on Lake Burley Griffin to celebrate in the most beautiful part of the city.

FAQs

• Where is the event taking place?
  • The event will be held at Commonwealth Place, there is ample and accessible parking in the vicinity of the event. Detailed maps will be provided in future.
• Can I see Lights on the Lake from anywhere on the Lake?
  • While the lights and lasers will be visible from other locations around Central Basin, you will only be able to see the water screen, hear the music, and have access to food, drinks and amenities from the event hub at Commonwealth Place. We encourage all visitors to view the show from this location.
• When is the event happening?
  • The event will take place from 5pm to 10pm on Wednesday 25, Thursday 26, Friday 27, and Saturday 28 January 2023.
• What time are the markets?
  • Markets begin at 5pm, the light show will begin at sundown.
• What time are the light shows?
  • The light show runs for 12 minutes every half hour from sundown. At this time of year this is approximately:
    • 9:00pm
    • 9:30pm
    • 10:00pm
• Do I need to book tickets for the event?
  • No, entry to the event is free and no bookings are required.
• How do I get to the event?
  • Parking in the National Triangle is FREE after 5pm, and on weekends and Public Holidays. Drivers should be sure to park safely and legally at all times. Infringements will be issued to drivers who park on the grass.
  • If you plan on driving, there are a large number of accessible carparks - See parking map
  • If you're catching public transport Route 6 and Route 2 runs along King Edward Terrace, which is in the vicinity of the event.
  • E-scooters: Commonwealth Place is a no-ride zone, there will be designated e-scooter parking on either side of the event area.
• What should I bring to the event?
  • You may want to bring a picnic blanket to sit on, as well as any snacks or beverages you'd like to enjoy during the event.
  • Lights on the Lake is an outdoor event with main viewing area in open space - please wear appropriate clothing.
• Will there be food and drinks available at the event?
  • Yes, there will be night markets featuring food, drinks, and crafts available at the event. The Jetty and Waters Edge will be operating at Commonwealth Place, as well as ample food and drink options at the market.
• Is the event suitable for families?
  • Yes, the event is suitable for all ages and is a great opportunity for families and friends to come together and enjoy the beautiful setting of Lake Burley Griffin.
• Where can I find more information about the event?

• First aid?
  • A first aid tent will be located at Commonwealth Place.
• Will there be security on-site?
  • Yes, roving security will monitor crowds and alcohol consumption.
• What happens during bad weather?
  • The show will proceed, unless there is an electrical storm.
• COVID-19
  • Let's keep Canberra COVID safe. There are no current COVID-19 restrictions for events in the ACT, we recommend you practice good hand hygiene and stay at home if you have any COVID-19 symptoms.
• Can I bring my pet?
  • Due to the large crowds expected at Lights on the Lake, it is not advisable to bring a pet to this event.
