Block 3 Section 39 Campbell – Australian War Memorial – Extension of Basement Carpark Adjacent to Poppy’s Café

The National Capital Authority (NCA) has received a Works Approval application for the extension of Poppy’s Café Carpark and installation of a temporary carpark at Block 3 Section 39 Campbell.

The Australian Government has committed $498 million over 10 years towards the expansion of gallery spaces and improvement and modernisation of Australian War Memorial (AWM) buildings. This Works Approval is the first of the permanent works forming part of the broader redevelopment project.

The scope of works subject to this application includes:

• The extension of the existing basement carpark adjacent to Poppy’s Café. The extension will provide an additional 123 car parking spaces for visitors to the Memorial. The carpark will be partly buried underground, the visible surface elements include a light grey coloured metal blade finish and part of the access road will have an exposed concrete retaining wall.
• Removal of 63 trees to accommodate the car park extension.
• Installation of a temporary car park (to be in place for approximately five years) atop the basement carpark providing 115 car spaces for construction workers involved in the ongoing redevelopment of the AWM.

The AWM ultimately intends to transform the temporary carpark area into an open landscaped area. This will include new tree planting to replenish the trees being removed. These works are not part of this application and will be subject to a future Works Approval. The carpark structure has been designed to support 1500mm soil depth for future tree planting.
